Do you put the same device in multiple groups?

Another Clément here, also co-founder of Photon :waving_hand:

We’re currently working on new iterations of how groups and devices interact in Photon — and before we dive too deep, we want to make sure we understand how you actually use it.

:bullseye: Do you ever put the same device in multiple groups? For example, a fixture that belongs to both a “Stage Left” group and a “Wash” group at the same time. And if so, what’s the goal behind it?

And while we’re at it — have you ever needed to control a specific device individually, without going through its group?

:light_bulb: This might sound like small details, but they have a real impact on how we design upcoming features — and we want to get it right for your workflow.

:backhand_index_pointing_down: Drop your answers below — even a quick yes/no helps. And if you have a specific use case in mind, we’d love to hear it!

While I don’t currently have the setup, in the future I would like to add some wash lights in front of stage that I could also control individually to highlight the guitarist during a solo or the vocals. I’d want to control the lights together as a group for the bulk of show, but then be able to control each one individually for those highlight moments.

Because of these sorts of limitations, I’ve pretty much never grouped more than one light into a “group”. I set up each one individually so I can have individual control at any time.

For what it’s worth, sometimes I think Photon seems like it was created to manage really large lights shows with large amounts of fixtures that would be run in groups and changed together, but I’m guessing the bulk of your users are using it for small shows with small numbers of lights. Individual control is probably much more useful to your user base. I could be wrong though, maybe I’m the only one using it for smaller productions.
